About Us - Who Is Sports Box Hawaii?

And How Did Hawaii's First Multi-Sport Simulator Get Started?

Sports Box is a sports entertainment facility focused on creating enjoyable experiences that connect people through entertainment, ambience, and technology. We pride ourselves in being an inviting environment for people of all ages, skill levels, and interests.

At Sports Box, you can compete with friends and family, enjoy food and drinks, and create memorable experiences.

But our adventure didn't start as a grand plan. It started with a golfer who saw an opportunity, took a risk, and built something Oahu had never seen before.

On December 18, 2021, co-owner DJ Chinen opened the first location in Aiea. He was 25 years old, coming from a career in business development, and he had a clear idea: Hawaii deserved something new, something fun, and something that worked for the whole family. What he built became Hawaii's first multi-sport simulator, and it's been growing ever since.

From Golf Box to Sports Box: The Origin Story

The original concept was golf. During the pandemic, interest in the sport surged across the country, and Hawaii was no exception. Chinen saw that shift and decided to act on it. The first location opened under the name Golf Box Hawaii, with a focus on letting people play over 100 world-renowned golf courses from inside a private, lounge-style box in Aiea.

Then something changed. New simulator technology arrived that made it possible to offer far more than golf. Almost immediately, Golf Box became Sports Box, and the sports list expanded from one to many. Baseball, soccer, dodgeball, hockey, bowling, and more got added to the lineup. The name changed, the concept grew.

That's the short version. The longer version is that two people believed Oahu needed more options for indoor entertainment, especially at night, and they built it themselves.

Why Co-Owners DJ Chinen and Alyssa Chinen Built This for Hawaii

DJ Chinen and Alyssa Chinen own and operate Sports Box Hawaii together. From the beginning, their goal was specific: create a space where every age, skill level, and background felt genuinely welcome.

Not just kids. Not just golfers. Not just athletes. Everyone.

This was the actual design goal, and it shaped every decision they made about the format, the equipment, the pricing model, and the setup of each box.

What Sports Box Hawaii Actually Is

If you've never been here, here's the straightforward version.

Sports Box Hawaii is a multi-sport simulator built for entertainment. Each box holds up to six people and comes with a sports simulator screen, real equipment for every sport, and a lounge area with a coffee table where your group can sit between turns.

You use real equipment. Real golf clubs. Real baseball bats. Real soccer balls. The simulator screen reads every shot or kick and shows you the result in real time.

Right now, Sports Box offers 14 sports: Golf, Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball, Shooting, Hockey, Field Goal Kicking, Pitching, Footgolf, Frisbee Golf, Bowling, Cornhole, and Dodgeball. Switching between sports takes about 45 to 60 seconds. One booking can cover five different sports in an hour if your group wants variety.

Who Sports Box Hawaii Is Built For

The honest answer is: almost anyone.

That's been true from day one. Reviews from early customers describe everything from four-year-olds to grandparents playing side by side, all having a good time, all getting something out of it.

A scratch golfer and someone who has never swung a club can share the same box and both walk out satisfied. That's not a coincidence. It's the result of building an experience that doesn't require skill to be fun.

The range of people who visit Sports Box Hawaii on any given week includes youth baseball players looking for extra reps without the pressure of practice, adults who grew up playing sports and want a night out that isn't just dinner, families who want something active that works for the youngest and oldest person in the group, tourists who want to do something local and different, and corporate groups who need a team activity that doesn't feel forced.

One customer put it simply: "It's amazing because we have opportunities to play all kinds of different sports and just enjoy family time with each other."

That's the experience Sports Box was built to deliver.

The Sports Box Experience: What to Expect When You Visit

You book a box online through our Book A Box system, or you walk in based on availability. Staff gets you checked in and set up. From there, your group controls the experience.

You bring your own food and drinks. Sports Box fully encourages it. Alcohol is allowed for guests 21 and over with valid ID. The lounge setup means everyone in your group stays part of the experience, whether they're up or waiting for their turn.

We provide all equipment for all ages. If you want to bring your own golf clubs or baseball bat, go ahead. Using your own gear often produces more accurate data from the simulator and a more personal feel overall.

No coaching. No structured program. No one grading your form. You show up, you play, and you have a good time.

Parties, Events, and Group Experiences at Sports Box

Group events are a big part of what Sports Box Hawaii does. Birthday parties, team bonding sessions, corporate gatherings, baby showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and anniversary celebrations all work well in our space.

The facility can accommodate parties ranging from 35 to 90 people, depending on the package. Party packages include multiple sport boxes, equipment for all ages, a karaoke room, potluck tables, seating, and tables for food. Guests can bring their own food and drinks, and alcohol is permitted for adults with ID.

What Sports Box Hawaii Stands For

The mission hasn't changed since the location opened in Aiea.

Sports Box Hawaii is a sports entertainment facility built to connect people through play, good company, and technology that makes every sport accessible. It's for all ages, all skill levels, and all kinds of occasions.

You don't need to be athletic. You don't need a reason beyond wanting to get out of the house and do something different. You just need to show up, and Sports Box takes care of the rest.

That's what DJ Chinen and Alyssa Chinen set out to build. That's what Sports Box Hawaii is today.
